Nurses

Practice nurses are qualified and registered nurses. They can help with health issues such as family planning, healthy living advice, blood pressure checks and dressings. The practice nurses run clinics for long-term health conditions such as asthma or diabetes, minor ailment clinics and carry out cervical smears.

Healthcare Assistants

Healthcare assistants (HCAs), work under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional, usually a nurse. In a GP surgery, HCAs do a variety of work including health checks, taking bloods samples and health promotion activities.

Paramedics

Paramedics may be running clinics, triaging and managing minor illnesses, and providing continuity for patients with complex health needs. They will be able to carry out assessments and the management of requests for same-day urgent home visits, as well as regular visits to homebound patients with long -term conditions.

Clinical Pharmacists

Clinical pharmacists work as part of the general practice team to improve value and outcomes from medicines and consult with and treat patients directly. This includes providing extra help to manage long-term conditions, advice for those on multiple medicines and better access to health checks.

Care Coordinator

Care coordinators provide extra time, capacity, and expertise to support patients in preparing for clinical conversations or in following up discussions with primary care professionals. They work closely with the GPs and other primary care colleagues within the primary care network (PCN) to identify and manage a caseload of identified patients, making sure that appropriate support is made available to them and their carers (if appropriate), and ensuring that their changing needs are addressed.
